Seasonal Produce

After a hot, dry April and a wet and windy May, our crops have had a bit of everything.  The spinach beet (chard) seems to have enjoyed the 40mm of rain over the last month - we're just getting the first cut off it now and it's particularly tasty.

The first of the outdoor headed lettuce are also fantastic - the red oakleaf variety 'Solix' is a real favourite at the moment.  Rocket, mustards and mizuna are also being harvested every other day - you can find all of these in our salad mix, and the nasturtium and borage flowers aren't far behind.

The broad beans should be with us by the end of June; the plants are covered in flowers so we're hoping for a bumper crop.  The courgettes and mini - cucumbers (in the glasshouse) both got off to a slow start in the face of cold winds and overcast skies, but a few calm, sunny days should make all the difference.  The polytunnel is starting to fill up with basil and will soon be smelling wonderful.  As usual we're growing three varieties; a compact 'greek' type which has a beautiful intense flavour; the more familiar, large leaved 'genovese' variety which is high yielding and regrows really well; and a red leaved type which stands up well to colder temperatures.

Other herbs in season at the moment include some delicious coriander, and the first of the parsley which should be ready in a few weeks.  We're experimenting with a 'giant' parsley variety new to us, so we have high hopes for that!
